Know Your Skin Type

NORMAL SKIN

Normal skin types typically have firm, supple, warm to the touch skin that is neither dry nor greasy, and without spots or blemishes. This skin type is the easiest to care for because it is neither too acidic or alkaline, with the average, neutral pH of 6.5.

·      Typical Normal Skin Type Traits:

o  Looks clear with an even texture and no noticeable pore size

o  Feels soft and smooth

o  Occasional problems can pop up, such as minor breakouts with small pimples around the chin and nose and dry patches if proper skin care and prevention is not handled correctly. This skin type can even have the occasional fine line make an appearance, as with most skin types, special care should be taken.

COMBINATION SKIN

A combination skin has oiliness in the T-zone and dryness on the cheeks. There are occasional acne outbreaks in the oily areas.

Combination skin types typically are dry with shiny, oily areas on the forehead, sides of nose, around the mouth and chin. Combination skin is difficult to care for because some areas need deep moisturizing while other need astringent, drying applications. This skin type responds well to several different applications of products designed to target the problem area.

·      Typical Combination Skin Type Traits:

o  Looks - dry and flaky in some areas while oily in areas around the forehead, nose and chin.

o  Feels - uneven and rough

o  Occasional problems - prone to pimples, blackheads, and enlarged pores. May also patches of dryness on the cheeks, as well as acne.

Uncovering the reason for overabundant oil production in some areas and dryness in others is an important step towards improving combination skin. One of the main causes of combination skin is the misuse of various cosmetic products. Aggressive washing with skin care products containing irritating ingredients can stimulate excessive oil production in the central portion of the face and dry out the skin on other portions.

o  Looks clear, but easily becomes red and blotchy.

o  Feels hot, burning or stinging when irritated.

·      Typical Dry Skin Type Traits:

o  Looks thin or papery with fine pores and is prone to broken veins on the cheeks.

o  Feels tight after cleansing, and can react by becoming red and blotchy.

o  Problems associated with this skin type is due to the lack of moisture in the skin, dry skin usually doesn't produce enough sebum, the skin's natural lubricating oil. Typical signs are dry patches and can develop lines and wrinkles more easily than other skin types.
